Call of Duty Modern Warfare Developer Says the Game Isn’t Political

In a new interview, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward says the game isn’t political.

In a new interview with Game Informer, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward discusses the question of if the game is political.

“The question ‘Is this a political game?’ doesn’t actually mean anything,” says Jacob Minkoff, campaign gameplay director. “Because what does the word ‘political’ mean to you?”

“These are the types of questions that have been asked for the last 50 years,” says Taylor Kurosaki, studio narrative director. “We do talk about concepts like colonialism, occupation, independence and freedom. We don’t maybe say those words specifically, but that’s the realm we’re in. You could have a game set in revolutionary America talk about those exact same things.”

Kurosaki continues by saying they want to explore the concepts of people not being completely good or completely evil. Additionally, they want to tackle the concept of what people will do to achieve victory and what comes from doing that.

“Do we touch on topics that bear a resemblance to the geopolitics of the world we live in today? Hell yeah, because that is the subject matter of Modern Warfare,” Minkoff continues. “Are we telling a story that has anything to do with the specific governments of any countries that we’re portraying? No. So if you’re asking is Trump in the video game? No, he isn’t.”

From there, Minkoff says their goal is to present different perspectives in the game. Additionally, they want players to get an understanding of why different groups fight “and to have empathy for all of them and what puts them in this situation.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on October 25 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
