IDW and Blacklist Games have signed separate agreements to bring fan-favorite franchises Contra and Bomberman to the board game world.
Licenseglobal.com has revealed that Konami has signed agreements with two board game developers to bring a few of their fan-favorite franchises to the analog world. Blacklist Games is working on a card game version of Contra, while IDW is putting their skills behind a Bomberman board game.
Blacklist Games specializes in cooperative miniature games. They’ve so far put out both Street Masters and Brook City. Plus, they’ll be releasing Altar Quest next summer. Altar Quest raised over $600,000 on its Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, making it the team’s most successful campaign so far. It’s fairly easy to see their style translate to the world of Contra. That said, I’ll be interested to see exactly how they translate running and gunning through a side-scrolling level. Shovel Knight: Duel Dungeons uses a moving modular tile system, which might just work here. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon as the team is aiming for a 2020 launch.
IDW specializes in porting big IPs to the board game world. They’ve successfully published solid games like TMNT: Shadows of the Past and are about to put out several big releases this year. Ghostbusters: Blackout and Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game both have the potential to hit big and boast excellent artwork. IDW has actually acquired the rights to all Bomberman-branded “board games, card games, puzzles, and collectible pins”, which means we could be seeing a number of releases in the next few months.
Neither property has a firm release date yet; however, I would expect full announcements soon.
