DOOM Eternal composer Mick Gordon assembled a choir composed of heavy metal singers to assist in working on the upcoming sequel’s soundtrack.
There are a lot of really good things about 2016’s DOOM revival, but near the top of the slate is hands-down Mick Gordon’s blaring heavy metal soundtrack. Like all things with the forthcoming sequel, this month’s release of DOOM Eternal, id Software is looking to amp things up even further compared to what we saw in 2016. Again returning as the composer, just how is Gordon himself looking to improve on the music of Eternal? By bringing in a choir composed entirely of singers from heavy metal bands, of course.
id Software and Bethesda released a new behind the scenes video today showing off the process Gordon has gone through in creating the music for DOOM Eternal and in the process highlighted one of the more outlandish pieces that was composed for the game. After putting together a song that featured chanting, Gordon found himself in need of a choir to sing said chants for the soundtrack. However, when you’re in need of a choir for a game like DOOM Eternal, you don’t just rent your local boys’ choir to come in and lay down the track. No, you have to do something much more on-brand.
Instead, Gordon said they put out an open call to have singers from heavy metal bands apply to be apart of the choir that would then be used to sing the chants. After the call went out, the heavy metal singers showed up in droves and Gordon ended up getting exactly what he needed. While the full song that features these chants wasn’t included in the video, we do hear bits and pieces of it and it sounds fantastic. It seems like a tall task for DOOM Eternal’s soundtrack to end up surpassing its predecessor, but based on what we’ve heard so far, it seems like Gordon could have another winner on his hands.
DOOM Eternal is finally slated to arrive later this month on March 20 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. A Switch version will be launching later on in 2020. The game seems freakin’ awesome and I cannot wait to play it.
