The studio is helmed by former developers of Factor 5, the team behind the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron franchise.
Following its massive success over the past few years, Epic Games has today announced that it has opened a new branch in Europe.
This new studio from Epic is located in Cologne, Germany, the same place where Gamescom just happens to be held each year. Founders of Factor 5, the team behind titles like Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Turrican, will be leading Epic Games Cologne. As for what this new studio will be doing, Epic said its focus will be on “emerging forms of interactive media and streaming technologies.”
“At the core of Epic’s success are highly-skilled and passionate individuals,” said the director of online technology at Epic, Julian Eggebrecht of this new wing of the company. “Germany is a nation at the forefront of technology and we look forward to extending our local presence as we fill newly created roles and hire exceptional talent.”
It’s unsurprising to see Epic continuing to branch out like this and it likely won’t be the last time we see it happen in the future. Epic Games Cologne has also become the second studio that Epic has in Germany, with the other office, Epic Games Berlin, opening back in 2016.
In total, Epic is said to have 16 studios now under its control. Other recent additions to Epic Games have included Rocket League developer Psyonix and Cloudgine, each of which were acquired in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
