Moi Rai Games and Team17 mix Pokemon and Metroidvania in Monster Sanctuary. The game is out in early access on August 28.
Team17 is the publisher behind numerous indie hits like Overcooked! and Yoku’s Island Express. They’re now teaming with the small development team at Moi Rai Games to bring Monster Sanctuary into early access. The game mixes elements of Pokemon and a Metroidvania in a package that looks like it could be great. Check out the release date trailer below.
Monster Sanctuary takes the monster-catching from the Pokemon series and adds a few extra twists. In this game, you only have three monsters in your battling team at a time; however, each monster has its own unique skill tree for you to build out. This allows for more customizable monsters and greater control over which tactics you use. Your monsters also all fight at the same time, which means you can build your team around specific combos that can knock enemies out quickly. On top of that, Monster Sanctuary uses your monsters’ powers to traverse a Metroidvania-inspired landscape. It’s a little like getting HMs in Pokemon games but seems a bit more in-depth.
The game actually has a demo that’s been available for a while. I played through it earlier this summer and enjoyed it. I thought the skill trees added layers of depth that could be very interesting over the course of a full game. I didn’t have enough time to really dig into the different combos you can build, but could easily see how fun the system might become.
Monster Sanctuary will come to early access on PC on August 28. The game is set for a 2020 release date.
