Nintendo Won’t Comment on Rumors of New Switch Models Because “It Would Spoil the Surprise for Consumers”

While Nintendo didn’t confirm that new Switch units are coming down the line, it seems destined to happen sooner or later.

Earlier this year, rumors started running rampant that Nintendo was toiling away on a variety of new Nintendo Switch models. One rumor–and a potential leak on a retail website–stated that a smaller version of the console, called Switch Mini, was supposed to be arriving later this year. Another rumor, which has now been debunked, stated that a new model was supposed to be released at the end of June 2019.

Speaking during a shareholders Q&A session, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about these rumored new models of the Switch and whether or not the company had anything to say about them. Furukawa chose to plead the fifth, for the most part.

“While we are aware there has been coverage to that effect, we cannot comment in regards to speculation and rumors about new hardware or software,” Furukawa stated. “It would spoil the surprise for consumers and is against the interests of our shareholders, so we are withholding any discussion.”

However, Furukawa did make sure to cover his bases by acknowledging that Nintendo is always working on new products of some sort. “We are constantly developing new hardware and new software. We’ll let you know as soon as anything is ready to be announced,” he ended.

Even though Nintendo formally didn’t announce anything here with these statements, the way in which Furukawa worded some of what is being expressed makes it seem like the company is surely at work on new Switch models of some sort. Considering how often Nintendo has put out hardware revisions in the past (just look at the 3DS) this really shouldn’t come as a surprise at all. The Switch always seemed destined to get new models at some point down the line and while Furukawa didn’t confirm that this will be happening just yet, it seems all but guaranteed.

If there are any new models of the Switch planned to release in 2019, you’d imagine that we should be hearing about them pretty soon. If that announcement does indeed happen, we’ll be sure to let you know.
