Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will be out in the spookiest month of the year.
Playtonic Games announced Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair just ahead of E3 this past summer. At the conference, we were able to get hands-on with the new game and came away feeling like it might be a “better sequel”. At the time, the developers didn’t want to commit to a firm release date. We still don’t quite have a date, but Playtonic did narrow the window down to October in a cute video they posted to Twitter today.

The update didn’t give us much in the way of gameplay, but we’ve seen our fair share of it over the last few months. At E3, Playtonic demoed the new 2D platforming levels that make up the meat and potatoes of the follow-up. We also got a very quick look at the 3D overworld that shifts as you play. It’s a departure from the 3D platforming the original game used, but it seems like it could be a step in the right direction.
One thing the team is not replacing in the Impossible Lair is the musical stylings of one Grant Kirkhope. His work featured on a number of classic Rare titles, including the Banjo-Kazooie series and the Viva Pinata games. He also worked on the original Yooka-Laylee and the team is bringing him back for this next one. In a follow-up tweet, Playtonic announced that they’ll be releasing one of the first tracks from the game next week, so Kirkhope fans can look forward to getting some new tunes shortly.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will be out in October for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
