Project Resistance Full Match Video: Everybody Relax, It Looks Fine

I’m not worried. You’re worried.

We’ve got a full match video of Project Resistance, the asymmetric multiplayer game from the Resident Evil universe. It still looks like “Resident Evil 2: Multiplayer,” and it still features a team of survivors racing against a clock to escape. It’s still an escape-room with zombies. Now, though, we’ve got a better sense for the game’s pacing. It moves quickly, by the way, so keep your eyes peeled.

I have some concerns. For instance, I’m troubled by how enemies can literally “drop in.” There are a couple of Tyrant spawns that seem particularly egregious and unfair. I get that the pace of this match is fairly high, and that there just isn’t time for the Mastermind to set up his pieces in a more sophisticated manner. However, games where enemies are able to spawn directly behind players are rightfully maligned. I hope this won’t be too much of an issue. If need be, I kind of hope the pace of play is toned down a notch. I’d prefer a more methodical game, but maybe that’s just me.

This drop-in issue seems exacerbated by the strength of the survivors. Simply put, the survivors handle everything the Mastermind throws at them quite easily–even when a Tyrant spawns in their midst. In fact, even dying doesn’t seem to bother them too much. It costs them a few seconds, but they are able to re-spawn and get back into the mix as if nothing happened. This seems strong. They finish the game with plenty of time left on the clock, too.

Of course, I’m sure not all games will go as smoothly for the survivors. In typical Resident Evil fashion, I’ll bet that bad things will snowball. When one character goes down, for instance, the others will become more vulnerable. If the leftover survivors are in a tough area to begin with, the lack of additional firepower could spell doom. Furthermore, I’m sure the balance of the game will change before it officially releases.

Another concern I have is with the Mastermind. While his voice acting is cool–thick French accent–he’s a little too chatty, and you’ll hear him repeat a number of phrases during the course of the match. Chatty and repetitive isn’t a great recipe, no matter how “meme-worthy” some of the lines may be.

All that being said, there are things that I like about this video. Resident Evil 2 plays beautifully, and it’s nice to see that game taken in a multiplayer direction. Working together with a few friends seems like it’ll be a lot of fun.

Working against friends also seems fun. In the video you’ll see some neat tactics employed by the Mastermind. One zombie is carrying a key item, for instance, so he takes that zombie into a corner of the level and fortifies the area. I’m sure games of “hide and seek” like this will start to be an important part of Project Resistance.

Finally, I just want to add that I like the presentation of this replay. It’s a little jarring watching four cameras at once, but I got used to it. In fact, I kind of hope the finished game will feature replays that look just like this. If I play a game as a survivor, I want to be able to look back and see how the Mastermind played the match. I want to be able to analyze how my team won or lost.
