Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV from Koei Tecmo releases for PC and PS4 in the west in early 2020.
While Dynasty Warriors and the recent Total War: Three Kingdoms are some of the most famous games set during China’s Three Kingdoms era, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series has been going at it for the longest. The tactics series has been going strong in Japan since 1985, but it has never caught on as much in the west. Hopefully, this will be changing soon as Koei Tecmo revealed Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV for PC and PS4 today.
Better yet, it will be releasing in the west in early 2020. As I mentioned, many games in the series either never make their way westward or take a long time to, so it good to see that Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is getting brought over in a timely manner. According to Koei Tecmo, this entry will still take place during the Han Dynasty’s fall and has players fighting to strategically take over as much territory as possible. The developers also highlighted the fact that Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV will bring some of the best elements of the series together, such as the simplified color system from the original game and ruler-based system heralded by series’ ninth and eleventh entries.
That system ensures that all actions take place on only one map and that each character will have “greater individuality.” As for new improvements, Koei Tecmo is boasting about an “Evolved Artificial Intelligence System” that ensures that each ruler, even ones within the same faction, have a distinct game experience. Hopefully, these changes will mean that Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is up to par with other massive strategy games highlighting the same era like the aforementioned Total War: Three Kingdoms.
While Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV will not be releasing for PC and PS4 in the west until early 2020, you can currently tide yourself over with the first trailer, which covers the history of the series, below.
