Announced at Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase, Streets of Rage 4 is coming to the Nintendo Switch in the first half of 2020.
The next entry of one of the most beloved beat em’ ups is just around the corner. Announced on today’s Nintendo Indie World Showcase, Streets of Rage 4 is coming to the Nintendo Switch in the first half of 2020.
The new trailer shown during the Indie World Showcase flaunts some gameplay from previously announced characters Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and Cherry Hunter. However, the most important bit of news from this trailer is the comeback of series protagonist Adam Hunter. Only playable in the first Streets of Rage, Adam Hunter has only been an NPC in each entry since. Streets of Rage 4 will allow you to play as Adam Hunter, bringing the original playable cast back together for the first time in over 20 years.
Developed by Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games, and Dotemu, Streets of Rage 4 is the next entry in the beloved beat em’ up franchise. With cel-shaded visuals and classic gameplay, the game attempts to modernize the series, while maintaining the retro elements the audience knows and loves. This includes Motohiro Kawashima as the composer, the same person who created the fantastic music from the previous entries.
The release date given for Streets of Rage 4 is a very loose “first half of 2020.” This means we’ll see it sometime between January and June 2020. It is also being developed for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
During PAX East last year, I had the chance to play Streets of Rage 4. The visuals, as you can see in the screenshots and trailers that have been revealed, are impressive with its hand-drawn art direction. It also looks to be a pretty solid entry for those who either love the series or are just into beat em’ ups. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any means, but I had fun playing it, especially alongside someone. You can check out my preview here.
