In a new interview, co-writer Halley Gross says Naughty Dog aims to have the most complex characters in gaming in The Last of Us Part II.
In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, The Last of Us Part II‘s Halley Gross says the game aims to feature the most complex and nuanced characters in gaming.
“This is the longest job I’ve ever had in my life,” says Gross via Wccftech. “Every day I’m working, I get the opportunity to work with designers, and animators, and sound guys and character artists, and we’re all working toward a vision about how do you make the most complex, nuanced character in a videogame?”
“Everybody is putting their particular smarts towards that, and you get to just watch these incredibly brilliant people and go, ‘how the f**k does your brain work?’ Wizards. They’re wizards,” continues Gross.
Previously, Gross has talked about the game’s story and themes and how Part II will challenge Ellie along the way. “And part of writing is, very unfortunately, torturing your characters, is putting them in hard situations, and testing their values and testing their drive,” says Gross. “So while we love Ellie, and we’re really excited to see her grow up, we’re certainly not going to coddle her.”
In addition to more complex characters, the game will feature smarter enemies that have heartbeats and allies that are more helpful. With these exciting additions, the series’ multiplayer mode won’t make a return this time around.
The Last of Us Part II launches on February 21, 2020, exclusively on PlayStation 4. The game is available for preorder on Amazon now.
