A fake leak on Reddit? I’m shocked.
Just a few days back, a new rumor started swirling on Reddit from user throwaway11113454 that Red Dead Redemption 2 was set to receive some DLC in the future that would revolve around aliens. This add-on would be similar to the Undead Nightmare expansion from the original Red Dead Redemption and was set to release at some point in the future. Furthermore, the supposed leaker also claimed a remake of the first RDR would also be coming down the line.
Well, as of now, all of this information, which was extremely suspect to begin with, how now been disproven by the “leaker” themselves. In a follow-up post, the user said that none of this information is true whatsoever and was instead done simply to see what would happen.
“This was an experiment I have always wanted to do regarding the spreading of rumors in video game culture,” they stated in a new post. They went on to say that they began feeling somewhat guilty for getting everyone’s hopes up when they started to see that multiple other outlets and YouTube channels began covering the “leak” which is why they came clean.
This story, in a nutshell, isn’t anything that we really haven’t seen before. Fake leaks like this are a dime a dozen, especially in the age of Reddit where users are constantly trying to gain attention or Karma from others. While some of them don’t end up coming forward with the truth as this person did, it is pretty crazy how often this seems to happen nowadays.
And whether or not this was truly meant to be an “experiment” or not by the user, it really does go to show just how out of hand reporting on rumors like this can get. In mere days, the user said that the original post alone was seen by 70,000 people on Reddit. Amplify that even further when considering how many others likely saw the reports from other news sites and YouTube channels and it stands to reason that millions may have been exposed to this “leak” that was never even remotely true. That’s a bit troublesome.
Still, that’s why you should almost never outright believe any “leaks” that you might find like this on the Internet, especially from users no one has ever heard of. While many things in the realm of video games do often leak, there are often many more bogus rumors just like this one that never end up being true at all. Basically, take every rumor on the Internet with a major grain of salt until you see it it has been proven for yourself.
And regardless of whether Rockstar Games will ever release more single-player content for Red Dead Redemption 2, the game’s multiplayer element, Red Dead Online, is still going strong. Plus, the game’s official score is set to arrive in just a few weeks. There’s still more of Red Dead Redemption 2 to be had, even if it won’t involve aliens.
