Announced today at Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase, Wingspan is making its way to Switch later this year.
Wingspan is an incredible board game from the team at Stonemaier Games. It mixes tight, card-driven gameplay with a setting that stands out in a sea filled with games using either medieval fantasy or the post-apocalypse. Designer Elizabeth Hargrave really knocked it out of the park and the excellent production at Stonemaier helped elevate it all the way to number twenty-two on Board Game Geek’s Best Games of All-Time list. And now, even more players will get to experience it as the game is on its way to Nintendo Switch.
Today’s Indie World Showcase was chock full of upcoming indie goodness. Toward the end of the presentation, Nintendo tossed us a sizzle reel of games, and Wingspan was one of the games included. Given it’s a board game adaptation, it makes sense for it to not get the full trailer treatment. That said, you absolutely should not sleep on Wingspan. It really is that good.
I mean, Wingspan is a Kennerspiel des Jahres winner. For those of you outside the hobby, that is, basically, the big Game of the Year award in board games. Technically, it’s the “Connoisseur-gamer Game of the Year”, but the distinction barely matters for the sake of this article. There aren’t many of those that are also available in a digital format. So getting a chance to play it without forking over $60 is incredibly appealing. It’s also an important game for the hobby because it proves that, as long as the design is great, you don’t need to use that same old generic theming to make a best-seller. If that leads to more innovative and fun settings, then that’s amazing news.
Fortunately, you don’t have to wait long to try out Wingspan for yourself. The game is coming this Spring to Nintendo Switch and PC. Make sure to check out all our other coverage around today’s Indie World. There’s quite a bit to get into.
