Wreckfest is the demolition derby themed racing game from developer Bugbear. The game has been out on PC since last year and will be on consoles next month.
Bugbear’s Wreckfest left early access and went into full release on PC last summer. The demolition derby styled racer blends impressive graphics, excellent physics, and oddly beautiful crashes into a package that fans love. We’ve known the game would eventually come to consoles for a while, but today publisher THQ Nordic finally revealed the release date. Check out the announcement video below.
As mentioned above, Wreckfest takes the old adage of “rubbing is racing” to the extreme. In Bugbear’s racing title, there are no rules. If you want to demolish your opponents on the track, then you can do so. And, given the game’s true-to-life physics, you’ll want to watch the gorgeous carnage over and over again.
Generally, the cars of Wreckfest don’t start off as pristine marvels of engineering. Instead, you’ll see banged up cars that will remind my more rural readers of the vehicles we all saw on a Saturday night at the county fair. That said, upgrades and customization play a large part in how your car performs. You can make anything from a nigh-indestructible, but plodding bulldozer of a car to a blazing fast glass cannon. The possibilities feel nearly endless.
Hopefully, these console ports retain the full suite of features from the PC version. I’m very interested in playing through the career mode and some of those challenge cars (lawnmowers, crop harvesters, etc.) look wild to play with.
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait much longer for the console release. Wreckfest is out on PS4 and Xbox One on August 27.
